. .For lots more information on the history and geography of Israel's changing borders Click Here |  Map 2 Jerusalem Includes: West Jerusalem The building of neighborhoods in what is known as West Jerusalem started in the middle of the 19th Century with neighborhoods such as Yemin Moshe, Nachalat Shiva, and Meah Shearim. Israel's government, the Knesset, is located in West Jerusalem. East Jerusalem During the Six-Day War of 1967, Jordan attacked Israel from the "West Bank" of the Jordan River which was still in Jordanian hands. When the fighting was over, Israel liberated and occupied all this "West Bank" area, including all of East Jerusalem with her Old City. Old City Divided into four "quarters"... Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Armenian. Map 3 BELOW is enlargement of the Old City. All Jews were barred from the Old City following Israel's 1948 War of Independence.

 Western Wall with Dome of the Rock in background The Western Wall is all that is left of the old Temple Mount when Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans nearly two thousand years ago. On the Temple Mount was a magnificent 2nd Jewish Temple (where the gilded Dome of the Rock appears behind and above the wall). Photo at Right is a scale model of this ancient temple.
